APOENA
Descolonização do Brasil
The name was a dedication to Apoena Meireles.
Known as a famous Brazilian indigenist. In 1979/80 in Rio de Janeiro, a group of residents, all European artists and ecologists, decided to oppose the call published as the 'Manifesto do Rio Negro' launched by the famous French art critic Pierre Restany, who suggested that contemporary artists should create experiences in the Amazon.
As a counterpoint, the Apoena Project was born. Descolonização do Brasil. A counter-expedition that would leave with a super-equipped Ford Rural vehicle loaded with costumes - theatrical symbols, weapons and survival equipment. T
he purpose of this counter-expedition would have been the symbolic destruction of certain emblems of western colonising culture in homage to the integrity of nature, of the Amazon rainforest, of the indigenous population. In fact, after a thousand vicissitudes, the sacrifice of the symbols was performed with a bonfire.
